Prosper Aluu Nigeria, b. 1999

Born in Nigeria in 1999, Prosper Aluu is a contemporary visual artist whose practice combines painting and collage. He initially studied Building Technology and Design at the Federal University of Technology in Owerri before devoting himself fully to his artistic career in 2017.

At the heart of his work lies a technique he developed and calls Abfillage, a visual language that combines abstraction, figuration, and newspaper collage. The artist uses fragments of Nigerian newspapers, which he collects in his everyday environment, as the basic material for his compositions. These printed surfaces then become visual archives where contemporary narratives, collective memory, and personal experiences intertwine.

In his works, human figures emerge from these layers of text and images. Reclining bodies, stylized Afro hairstyles, and golden crowns above the characters' heads are recurring elements in his visual vocabulary. These crowns lend his figures symbolic dignity and celebrate ordinary individuals whose stories shape collective memory.

Through this practice, Prosper Aluu explores issues of identity, transmission, and cultural memory. By preserving the material traces of printed news, he questions the way in which personal and collective narratives are constructed, transformed, and sometimes contradict each other.

His work has been exhibited in Nigeria, South Africa, the United States, and the United Kingdom, featuring Alexis Gallery Lagos, SMO Contemporary Gallery, Eclectica Contemporary (Cape Town), Coningsby Gallery (London), and LouiSimone Guirandou Gallery (Abidjan). He has also had solo exhibitions at the Alliance Française in Lagos and TAC Gallery (Tulsa, Oklahoma).

In 2024, he was selected as one of the 15 finalists for the Kuenyehia Prize for Contemporary African Art and completed an artist residency at Villa Karo (Grand-Popo, Benin).

Prosper Aluu's works are now included in several private and institutional collections, notably the collection of the Société Générale Côte d'Ivoire Foundation.
