Coming from Mali, Senegal, France, Nigeria and Burkina Faso, the origins of the five artists presented are as varied as the media used. Painting, engraving, collage, sculpture and watercolour are just some of the ways in which they express the richness of their creativity.
From 13 July to 26 August, LouiSimone Guirandou Gallery presented the fifth edition of Découvertes, its summer exhibition showcasing the year's most promising artistic encounters.
This year, the gallery introduced the work of five artists: Prosper Aluu, Stéphane Carrer, Christophe Sawadogo, Dramane Toloba and Khéraba Traoré. They come from Mali, Senegal, France, Nigeria and Burkina Faso. Their backgrounds are as diverse as the media they use. Painting, engraving, collaging, sculpting and watercolouring are some of the ways they express their creativity.
The exhibition highlights some of their shared concerns, such as children's rights, power of words, women's place in society and the intrusion of dreams into reality. The five artists offer their very own readings of the world around them, and don't shy away from tackling societal issues. Through bright, festive colours, astonishing combinations of materials, or combinations of drawing and writing, Découvertes #5 boldly and serenely tackles these themes. This exhibition invites viewers to immerse themselves in the richness and diversity of contemporary West African art.
