Between March and May 2023, Aida Muluneh unveiled a new series of twelve photographs commissioned by the Public Art Fund, a New York-based nonprofit organization. These works were exhibited in 330 bus shelters in Abidjan, Boston, Chicago, and New York, reaching a wide and diverse audience between Côte d'Ivoire and the United States. This initiative was a first for the Public Art Fund, which partnered with JC Decaux for the first time with an African artist.
After traveling between two continents and meeting an international audience, the series is now reunited in its entirety at the LouiSimone Guirandou Gallery in Abidjan, the city where it was created. By inviting herself into the daily life of her audience, Aïda Muluneh invites them to observe an environment to which our eyes, too accustomed, no longer pay attention.
This is where I am is an opportunity to dive into the world of an artist who pushes the boundaries of contemporary photography by transforming a passing place into an exhibition space. By taking the place of advertising posters, the photographer invites us to reflect on our consumption of images and overturns representations of the continent.
