These three central figures, dressed in majestic red and yellow garments, stand out against a green background, echoing the colors of the Ethiopian flag. Two of the women hold a jebena—the traditional coffee pot passed down within families. In Ethiopia, preparing coffee in a jebena is a social ritual often associated with femininity. As the coffee is prepared, women gather to talk. For Aïda Muluneh, these imposing women dressed in yellow and red embody Ethiopian women, the stoic pillars of her nation.
Through metaphor, Muluneh’s vibrant photographs highlight her cultural, political, and national identity as an Ethiopian woman and immigrant living in Côte d’Ivoire. This work is part of the Public Art Fund exhibition This Is Where I Am, featuring posters displayed on bus shelters throughout Abidjan, where the artist currently resides.
