Although its name evokes a sense of cohesion, the painting itself depicts young boys hanging out, seemingly not interacting with each other. It builds on "Hanging Out" by zooming out to show that it's not just the military at the door, but now the people at the table as well. The gaze of one of them observing us with a face split in two.
More broadly, the male figures in my work rarely interact - in fact, I've never imagined them interacting. This is reminiscent of their connection to the army (as mentioned in “Hanging out”). Young men who, although brothers in arms, are taught to remain stern, distant, and functional. Keeping between them the same distance I felt later in my relationship with my father, whom I often accused of a lack of communication.
